Synonyms for Acacia pycnantha Benth

The specific epithet is from the Greek words pycnantha pycnos derived for thick and compact, and anthos for flowering. The first description was published in 1842 by George Bentham in London Journal of Botany, 1, 351st The type specimen in 1836 in the interior of New South Wales by Thomas Mitchell collected, who led two expeditions to Darling River and Murray River.

Synonyms for Acacia pycnantha Benth. are Acacia falcinella Meisner. nom. illeg. nom. illeg., Acacia pycnantha var petiolaris H. Vilm., Acacia westonii Maiden, orth westoni var Maiden Acacia, Acacia petiolaris clay., Racosperma pycnanthum (Bentham) Pedley.

Natural hybrids between A. pycnantha and A. williamsonii are known from the state of Victoria in Australia. In culture were hybrids between A. pycnantha, A. dealbata and A. podalyrifolia; produced in Europe were Acacia × deneufvillei L. Winter ex A. Berger (A. podalyriifolia × A. pycnantha) as 'de Neufvillei', Acacia × hanburyana L. Winter ex A. Berger (A. podalyriifolia × A. dealbata), Acacia × siebertiana L. Winter ex A. Berger (A. podalyriifolia × A. pycnantha).
