The Large Lion Paw Blossom

The big lion claw (Aphanes arvensis) is an annual plant, which belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of rare plants and fallen sharply. The plant is native to Eurasia.

The plant is 2-20 cm high. The hairy, toothed and trilobal, 0.5 to 1.5 cm long leaves are slightly blue-green. The teeth of the middle and upper stipules are one to two times as long as wide.

The large lion paw blossoms from May to August with 1.8 to 2.7 mm long, greenish flowers. Sepals not pull after flowering together.

The fruit is 1.2 to 1.4 mm long, brownish nub.

The plant occurs in cropland in moist, nutrient-rich and calcareous, sandy clay or less.
