Bryony Flowers

The bryony (Bryonia dioica) is a plant of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae). It is a dioecious plant found in hedges and bushes (in the dunes). The species is toxic and is a common mistake.

The long, thin stems arise from a tuberous rootstock. They climb using tendrils to a height of 4 m. The vines spiral roll and confirm the plant firmly to the support.

The leaf is hairy and three to five lobed. The leaf is shaped like an egg and has a heart shaped base. The unbranched tendrils near the leaf spring steal.

The bryony flowers from May to September. The male flowers are larger than the female. The flower is yellowish white. The flower of the male flower is 1.2 to 1.8 cm. The female flower is 1 to 1.2 cm. On a sand flies bryony bee: the heggenrankbij (Andrena florea), a solitary. The larva of the bryony ladybird (Epilachna argus) feeds on the leaf of the plant. The fruit is a red berry with three to six seeds. These berries are poisonous.

It cultivates the white bryony sometimes with bisexual flowers. The corolla was then yellow-green and black berries.
