Broom

Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) is a species of deciduous shrub of the family Fabaceae native to north-west Europe. It has long been used in the dry leaves to make brooms.

Description

Scotch broom reaches a height of 1 to 3 m, rarely 4 m The main branches have a diameter that can reach 5 to 10 cm. It is a much branched shrub columnar in port, with green stems angular, small deciduous, simple, compound and trifoliate or lanceolate, measuring 5-15 mm long.

In spring it is covered entirely by a multitude of fragrant yellow flowers, of 15-20 mm in width and 20-30 mm in length, leaving quickly see the stamens. The flower of complex structure and devoid of nectar is pollinated by bees . It is closed until it is visited by the insect and then remains open.

At the end of summer, the pods oblong, 2 to 3 cm long, 8 mm wide and 2-3 mm thick, turn black, burst with a popping noise and spread their seeds around the mother plant .
