Horsegram (Tetragonolobus maritimus, synonyms: Lotus maritimus and Tetragonolobus siliquosus) is a plant belonging to the Fabaceae family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and stable or increased. The plant is native to central Europe. In the Netherlands, the plant in southern Limburg.
The plant is 10-40 cm high. The subterranean parts of the plant smell unpleasant. The leaves are ternate with stipules, which is half as long as the leaves.
Horsegram blooms from May to August with lemon yellow, single, long stalks (5-15 cm) flowers. Petals are 2.5 to 3 cm long. The calyx teeth are all the same length and shorter than the calyx tube. The flower is pollinated by bumblebees with a long tongue. Bumblebees pollinate with a short tongue, but not rob the nectar through a hole in the calyx-tube and crown it.
The fruit is 3-6 cm long and 3 mm wide, straight, angular pods with about 1 mm wide wings. The almost round, olive-green seeds are 2 mm and more or less speckled.
The plant of the grass on slopes with moderately moist, calcareous soil.
