Gaillardia

Gaillardia is a genus of annuals and perennials, drought tolerant, belonging to the family (Asteraceae), native to North America.

It was named in honor of M. Gaillard de Charentonneau, in the eighteenth century French magistrate who was patron of botanists. Its inflorescences resemble the bright blankets of Native Americans.

Stems branched or linear lanceolate leaves. It grows 45-60 cm tall, with bicolor flowers with red to brown. There are over 24 known species of Gaillardia. Grow in extreme conditions of aridity, even in the sands of the seashore.

Gaillardia species are used as food by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Schinia bina (eating of G. pulchella), Schinia Masoni (which feeds exclusively on G. aristata) and Schinia Volupia (which feeds exclusively on G. pulchella .)

The genus is native to America, not only in North America, as in South America, three species, two of them and a variety endemic to Argentina.
