Field eyebright (Odontites vernus subsp. Vernus, synonym: Odontites vernus subsp. Longifolius) is an annual plant in the broomrape family (Orobanchaceae). The subspecies is native to Central Europe, South Limburg in the Netherlands and the river area. The subspecies is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and greatly reduced in number.
Field eyebright is half parasite on grasses and cypergrassen. The roots of the plant absorb water and salts to the roots of other plants, but the plant itself is capable of photosynthesis.
The plant is 10-50 cm high. One to four pairs of branches, which are high on the stem starting at an angle of 20 ° to 40 ° to the axis. The leaves and bracts are scheduled to line-lanceolate. The pale green to gray-green, often purple-faced, leaves are 1 to 4.5 cm long and 0.3 to 1 cm wide. They have one to five on each side flat teeth.
Field eyebright flowers in May and June with pink or pink-red, sometimes white, 8-11 mm long flowers. At the end of flowering crosses mark the outside of the corolla. The teeth of the sepals triangular-lanceolate to lanceolate, and as long or longer than the calyx tube. Bracts mostly longer than the calyx tube. The first flowers are on the sixth to the thirteenth node of the stem.
The fruit is a capsule 4-7 mm long. The light brown seeds from 2 to 2.5 mm long.
The plant is found in cereal fields.
