The Shape of Cornflower Aster

The cornflower aster (Stokesia laevis, Syn Stokesia cyanea L'Her.) Is the only species of the genus Stokesia.

Features

The cornflower aster is an evergreen perennial, herbaceous plant, plant height 30-60 (rarely 100) cm reached. The plant is an upright and branched Halbrosettenstaude and forms a rhizome. The leaves are lanceolate and have a broad white midrib.

The lower leaves are long and 20 inches, 7 inches wide, stalked, and entire, the upper ones are sitting on the bottom and sometimes perforated or covered with thorns.

The flower heads are in a terminal Doldenrispe or arranged separately. They have a diameter of 40-10 centimeters. The outer bracts are deciduous and spiny at the base. Chaff, leaves are not available. The crown is blue, purple, blue, pink or white.

The flowers are radially middle and lighter or darker. The outer ones are dorsiventral, external, extended, five-column and wide. The fruits have five small pappus-scales.

The flowering period extends from August to September, they rarely starts in June.

Occurrence

The cornflower aster occurs in the southeastern United States from South Carolina to Florida and Louisiana in moist, acidophilous pine forests and swamps.

Use

The cornflower aster is dispersed as an ornamental plant for perennial beds, rock gardens and Moorbeete used. The species is at least since 1766 in culture. There are several varieties. These heads have white or light blue with white middle and lower plants.
